It’s one of the first questions you ask when planning a trip to Terceira: is it worth renting a car in Terceira, Azores? The short answer is yes, in most cases. But it’s worth understanding why, what the alternatives are, and in which specific situations a rental car does (or doesn’t) make a difference.

Terceira’s interior is defined by intensely green pastures, divided by basalt stone walls that have shaped the landscape for centuries.

Terceira in numbers

Before talking about transport, it helps to understand the island’s scale. Terceira is about 29 km long by 18 km wide, with a coastal perimeter of roughly 90 km. It’s a compact island. Driving from one end to the other takes less than 40 minutes.

But being small doesn’t mean everything is walkable or reachable by bus. Most tourist attractions are outside the two urban centres (Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória), in rural areas or the mountainous interior, with no practical access by public transport.

Renting a car in Terceira, Azores: transport options

1. Public Transportation (EVT / MobiAzores)

Viação Terceirense (EVT), part of the MobiAzores network, has operated public transport in Terceira for over 65 years. There are around 8 regular routes linking the island’s main parishes.

What works well: the connection between Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória is the most frequent and covers the basic need to travel between the two urban centres. It’s affordable (tickets between €2 and €5).

What doesn’t work for tourists: services are infrequent (many routes run only 2 to 3 times a day), buses don’t stop at the main tourist spots (Biscoitos, Algar do Carvão, Furnas do Enxofre, Serra de Santa Bárbara), and timetables are designed for residents (morning and late-afternoon commutes), not visitors. At weekends, the service is even more limited.

A concrete example: the route from the airport to Angra do Heroísmo runs only 3 times a day and takes about 52 minutes. By car, the same trip takes 20 minutes.

Verdict: useful for occasional trips between Angra and Praia da Vitória. Not enough to explore the island independently.

2. Taxis

Taxis exist in Terceira, but they work differently from what you’ll find in mainland cities. There are no apps like Uber or Bolt. Taxis don’t use meters: the price is agreed in advance with the driver.

Reference prices:

RouteEstimated price
Airport to Angra do Heroísmo€22 – €30
Praia da Vitória Airport€8 – €12
Angra to Biscoitos (one way)€25 – €35
Angra to Algar do Carvão (one way)€18 – €25

The issue with taxis isn’t the price of a single ride. It’s the total cost over time. If you use taxis to go to and from Biscoitos, Algar do Carvão and Furnas do Enxofre on three separate days, the total can easily exceed the cost of renting a car for the whole week. And the flexibility isn’t comparable: with taxis, you depend on the driver’s availability and pre-arranged times.

Verdict: good for occasional transfers (airport to hotel). Expensive and impractical for exploring the island over several days.

3. Transfers and organised tours

There are companies offering airport-to-hotel transfers and full-day island tours, usually in groups. Some include stops at the main tourist attractions.

What works well: if you’d rather not drive and want a guided itinerary with local insight, it can be a good option for a day or two.

What doesn’t work: you lose the freedom to stop where you want, for as long as you want. Itineraries are fixed, stops are time-limited, and you can’t detour to a hidden beach or a restaurant someone recommended. For trips of 3 days or more, it becomes restrictive.

Verdict: a valid alternative if you don’t want to drive. Less flexible and more expensive than renting for stays of several days.

4. Renting a car in Terceira, Azores

Renting a car in Terceira, Azores, is by far the most practical way to explore the island. With a car, you can leave the airport and go straight where you want, stop at any viewpoint, adjust your day to the weather (very relevant in the Azores, where conditions change quickly), and reach places that simply aren’t accessible any other way.

Reference costs: renting a car in Terceira, Azores, varies by season and vehicle category. At Neblu, all rentals include full insurance with no excess, unlimited mileage and online check-in, with no extra costs at the counter.

What to consider:

Terceira’s roads are in good condition. The main (regional) roads are well maintained and signposted. Some secondary roads in the island’s interior are narrower, but perfectly drivable with any vehicle. You don’t need a 4×4.

The island is small, so you won’t be driving long distances. A full tank easily lasts a whole week of exploring.

Free parking is available at most tourist spots and bathing areas. In Angra do Heroísmo and Praia da Vitória, there are paid parking zones in the centre, but prices are reasonable.

Verdict: the most practical and flexible option—and for stays of 3 days or more, also the most cost-effective.

When renting a car in Terceira is essential

There are situations where not having a car simply means you won’t be able to visit certain places:

Biscoitos Natural Pools. On the north coast, 30 minutes by car from Angra. There’s no direct bus with a tourist-friendly timetable.

Algar do Carvão and Gruta do Natal. In the island’s interior, with no public transport access. A return taxi costs more than a day’s rental.

Furnas do Enxofre. A geothermal area in the centre of the island, accessible only by road.

Serra de Santa Bárbara. Terceira’s highest point (1,021 metres), according to Visit Azores. The access road is paved but remote.

Serra do Cume Viewpoint. One of the Azores’ best-known views, with the patchwork of fields seen from above. Only accessible by car.

Bathing areas spread around the island. Cinco Ribeiras, Quatro Ribeiras, Porto Martins. All outside the urban centres.

When you can skip the car

To be fair, there are scenarios where you may not need a car:

If you’re staying only in Angra do Heroísmo. The historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is compact and easy to explore on foot. Silveira bathing area is 5 minutes away. There are restaurants, bars and most services within the city.

If you’re staying only in Praia da Vitória. The beach (the island’s largest sandy beach) is right by the centre. The town has enough restaurants and shops.

If you book organised tours every day. In that case, transport is included.

But even in these scenarios, you’ll miss most of what Terceira has to offer. It’s an island of dispersed nature, and almost everything that makes it special is outside the towns.
